IN-HOUSE MILKS
All of our dairy-free milks are made in-house in order to reduce TetraPak usage.
TetraPaks!! 😡 Why we don’t purchase our alt milks in em?
Here’s why: For a product to stay stable in TetraPaks it has to be processed eg. heated to a high heat which alters the taste, proteins and nutritional value. Often a lot of these things are added back to the product as additives.
Also packaged alt milk products are mostly only between 2-5% actual ingredient (eg. almond). The rest is just water and additives (that’s a lot of unnecessary weight and volume to add to transport carbon miles). Until recently one NZ oat milk brand was sending its milk to Sweden and back to be packaged into TetraPaks.
TetraPaks are made up of multiple layers of plastic, foil and paper so aren’t curb-side recyclable. And yes, there is the saveboard thing where TetraPaks are made into building products “well yay!” but this really is just a band-aid waste solution and is certainly not a circular solution which some alt milk packaging claims it to be.
We use pure cold pressed nut butter (it comes to us in reusable pails and jars) we then add the water to it, a small amount of coconut and protein to help with the steaming, and a tiny bit of maple to sweeten. It’s taken a bit of practice but we reckon saving 1000s of TetraPaks and making something taste better from real ingredients is a win.
